Pre-conference Workshops

Pre-conference workshop registration is $15 for everyone and the following sessions will be offered.

Nuances of the New Teacher Evaluation Tool, Valerie Bridges and John Farrelly, Washington County School

We will provide educators with a clear understanding of North Carolina's New Teacher Evaluation Instrument. We will unpack the process, standards, behaviors, artifacts in a manner that addresses all learning styles. We will tinker with the tools until the partipants are comfortable with the the plan, process, and procedures. Our ultimate goal is to broaden the leadership for school administrators, teachers, school board members and educational enthusiast.

Folding Your Way Through Middle School Writing, Rebecca McKnight, The Academy at Lincoln

Are you looking for ways to organize student writing work? Do you use daybooks and want to have small ways to capture and record mini-lessons, brainstorms, or drafts? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then this workshop is for you! Come learn how to create 3-dimensional organizers to help your students organize their work. Hands-on experience and handouts will be provided.

Literate Lives:Adolescent Literature in the Age of the Common Core, Tanji Reed Marshall & Krista Lewis, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

As North Carolina continues the implementation of the national Common Core State Standards, educational stakeholders need a framework around which to begin re-visioning their instructional expectations, practices, and assessments. This four-phase workshop is designed to provide concrete research and evidence based strategies whereby participants will leave with a firm understanding of how adolescent literature can be used to meet demands of the Common Core State Standards.

Rethinking Revision with Google Docs, Joan F. Mitchell, Wake Forest University

Do you spend hours making comments on student essays only to hand them back and receive in return a pile of freshly printed copies of students’ original drafts with a few grammatical changes? Do you wonder when the complex process of “revision” became synonymous with “proofreading”? This workshop will challenge you to think about why we ask students to revise and how we can use revision instruction to shift the power and responsibility of improving writing back to our students. Google Docs provides a unique online platformthrough which students can implement these revision strategies in an interactive environment that utilizes their intuitive technological skills.Participants will benefit from a toolkit of effective revision strategies as well as an understanding of how to utilize Google Docs to make those strategies relevant for today’s students.

Last year’s conference, The Diversity of 21st Century Teaching and Learning, highlighted the challenges that exist and opportunities that present themselves when we work to adapt our teaching practices to the needs of both individual students and our connected world. There’s no doubt that as educators, we are being asked more and more frequently to serve a multiplicity of interests, originating on the local, regional and national levels, interests that sometimes conflict or diverge. Considering the current landscape of uncertainty that we teach in, we invite you join us in thinking about convergences, the places where we, as educators, achieve traction and arrive at Common Ground--the shared intellectual, physical, and virtual spaces that empower us to overcome social and bureaucratic obstacles to realize the transformative power of language, literacy, and learning. ~SWP

Follow-ups from Fall Conference 2010

Kate Wernersbach
