Submission & Style Guidelines for Authors

Fringes invites manuscript submissions that address the interests and experiences of practicing ELA teachers, pre-service ELA teachers, and ELA teacher educators. Specifically, Fringes accepts submissions of the following:

  • Teacher Practices. These articles provide innovative, effective, and practical teaching strategies that English Language Arts educators can adapt and incorporate into their own classrooms.

  • Empirical & Theoretical Research. These articles blend research and practice, providing educators with scholarship that can inform pedagogical strategies, curricular choices, and instruction.

  • Next Generation. These articles feature the voices of pre-service English Language Arts teachers who are interested in sharing their pedagogical and/or curricular ideas with others in the field.

Manuscript Formatting and Length: All submissions should be typed using Times New Roman 12 point font and submitted as editable Word documents. Manuscripts should be double-spaced with 1” margins. Authors should follow the current edition of the MLA Handbook and should provide a complete list of works cited following MLA style. The word length for each article type is reviewed below. All word counts are exclusive of works cited, tables, figures, images, and appendices.

  • Teacher Practices: 1,000 - 3,000 words

  • Empirical & Theoretical Research: 3,000 - 6,000 words

  • Next Generation: 1,000 - 2,000 words

Style: As you prepare your manuscript, please attend to the following:

  • Avoid deficit-oriented language when discussing learners, teachers, and community- and school-based contexts.

  • Refer to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Statement on Gender and Language when discussing gender and sexuality. In particular, we ask that authors use the gender-neutral singular pronouns they, them, their, and theirs, unless a specific pronoun is otherwise indicated.

  • Take advantage of the journal’s digital platform and to include hyperlinks, images, and videos where appropriate and relevant.

Submission Guidelines: All submissions to Fringes must be the original work of the author(s). Manuscript submissions should not have been previously published elsewhere or simultaneously submitted to any other publication. All manuscripts should be submitted by email to the editors of Fringes (fringes.nceta.editors@gmail.com) and should include the following:

Title Page:

  • Include title of submission and manuscript type (Teacher Practices, Empirical & Theoretical Research, or Next Generation) and the names, affiliations, and contact information for all authors.

Blinded manuscript:

  • Include an Abstract of no more than 150 words at the beginning of the manuscript. The Abstract should provide a summary of the manuscript.

  • To ensue impartial review, all references to the author(s) must be removed from the manuscript. In place of your name, please use the word “Author” for the initial review process. If your manuscript is selected for publication, you will change “Author” to your name throughout.

  • Supplemental Materials: All tables, images, and figures should be placed at the appropriate places within the body of the manuscript (rather than appearing as pages after the manuscript). Appendices should appear at the end of the manuscript, after the Works Cited page.
